Demonstrate knowledge of human nutritional needs and the role of nutrition in improving individual health and the societal economic impact of food choices.
Individuals need a specific amount of macro and micro nutrients in order for their bodies to function properly. The consumption of some of your macro and micro nutrients when there is a deficiency, can result in an overall improvement on your health. Introducing a healthy eating pattern might seem unattainable especially when social economic heavily influence some individuals to stray to unhealthy expectations of their appearance . Relate technological advancements in medicine and food production to the advancement of the science of human nutrition.
The technological advancements in regards to medicine allows us to know whether you are maintaining a healthy diet, as well as know if you are exceeding or deficient in a certain nutrient. The advancements in food production are those in relation to our food being mass produced and being genetically modified to appear as they are meeting our nutrient needs.
Explain the impact that the food industry has on human food choices and the subsequent relationship to health and disease at the individual, societal, and environmental level.
The impact on the food industry is very much present, we are constantly advertised food and it is more readily available than it ever was. Though those points may seem as a positive impact, it it more of a negative impact because the food that is readily available to us most of the time does not hold the correct nutrient content that we need. many "seasonal" fruits are no longer seasonal because of how they are modified to be readily available to us.
Provide examples of past and present nutrient and diet trends in modern society and the positive and/or negative implications on human health and the earth’s resources.
I believe that a past trend consisted of more unhealthy eating because of the lack of evidence proving the true negative affects that it have on the human body when mass consumed. Now we still have a huge presence of fast food therefore we are seeing a trend with individuals that do not support eating there or eating unhealthy in general. So we are seeing various diets enter our society in hopes to pull individuals into a healthy eating diet, like becoming a vegan or vegetarian.
Provide examples of positive and negative interactions of humankind with microorganisms regarding sickness, health and food production. With our obesity epidemic and the leading consequences because of such diagnosis, the mass production of food heavily impacts and can lead to many negative interaction regarding our immune system. The preparation not done properly as well as the proper storage can lead to various sicknesses, because of the bacteria and or viruses involved.
Address diet and nutrient issues and concerns for weight control, disease prevention, physical activity, food availability, and biotechnology.
With foods like fast food being readily available to us in every corner of our communities, we are seeing a big increase in obesity and diabetes 2. While we are seeing the problem of over-consumption of unhealthily food we also face the problem of lack of physical activity for many individuals.

Make connections between what you studied in this nutrition course with what you’ve learned in other courses at SLCC or before. Make specific references to your work in this class and in the other courses. How did what you learn in the other courses enhance what you learned in nutrition, and vice versa? This course relates mostly to my English courses in the fact that they took a broad concept and explained from the foundation of what the concept was to all the various components with the broad course of English. The assignments that were done in this course involved applying what you had learned in the course and taking it one step further to demonstrate that you fully understand the topic, like we did in the nutrition perspective assignment. My English courses too applied this concept of further learning in their assignments, where we learned a certain type of writing and had to demonstrated our understanding by writing a paper of our own.
Reflect on how you thought about nutrition before you took this course and how you think about it now that the course is over. Have any of your assumptions or understandings changed? Why? What assignments/activities/readings were influential in this process? How will you approach (course topic) differently in the future?
I always thought that nutrition was all about maintaining a healthy eating diet, while avoiding eating unhealthy food as much as possible, like fast food. This course really broke down the basics of nutrition and therefore it allowed me to see that the concept of nutrition is not a black and white spectrum but rather it is an overall concept where many micro-components make it up. The $10 challenge as well as the research paper allowed my knowledge to grow in relation to nutrition, it put into perspective the reality of striving for a healthy food diet for myself. Nutrition is important for everyone and learning the different nutrients that one needs to have a healthy lifestyle is valuable knowledge now that I have it. Knowing what I know now and all the things I have learned in this course, I see myself continuing to apply healthy eating habits in my life.
